Q: What is the Asian shoe that’s a sock and a flip flop?

A: Hey there! I think the type of sock you are thinking about is the Tabi. Tabi socks are basically the precursor to five finger socks. Tabi originated in Japan and date back to the 1600s. If you are familiar with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tabi kind of look like their feet since they separate your big toe from your other toes. They aren’t a flip flop and a sock though because Tabi socks are usually worn with flip flops or sandals. In Japan, men and women wear  them with traditional thonged footwear. When Japanese people wear their traditional garb, Tabi are a must. The most common color for Tabi is white.
